Statements on Philippines Eligibility for H-2B Visa Program, Congressional Measure to Lift Medicaid

Hagåtña, Guam – Senator Telena Cruz Nelson, chairperson of the Committee on Federal and Foreign Relations, issued the following statement relative to the eligibility of the Philippines to participate in the H-2B non-immigrant visa program:

“This decisive action opens the door to re-igniting the significant and essential contributions of skilled workers in our construction industry,” said Senator Nelson, who also oversees the Committee on Infrastructural Advancement. “Our community and economy only stands to benefit from this long-awaited action. We look forward to continued collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, Department of Interior and Delegate San Nicolas in building Guam’s labor force and supporting the growth of our island.”

Senator Nelson issued the following statement relative to Congressman Kilili Sablan’s measure to lift the Medicaid cap for U.S. territories:

“We extend our gratitude and support to Congressman Sablan for his swift action in addressing the inequality of federal healthcare policy,” Senator Nelson said. “Healthcare has been at the forefront of policy discussions nationwide. With many workers losing their jobs and healthcare coverage due to the pandemic, lifting the cap on Medicaid for Guam and U.S. territories will provide a greater safety net and less limitations for families in need and at a time when they need healthcare most.”
