Nelson Allocates Money Towards Compensations and Benefits Study for the Guam Department of Education

Hagåtña, Guam – Today, Senator Nelson passed an amendment to allocate one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) from the General Fund to fund an Educator Classification, Compensation and Benefits Study. The amendment states that the final adjusted plan shall be implemented by June 2023.

Educators are among the only government employees that must pay for their own certifications and additional training. There are scholarship programs available to educators, but not all of them can avail themselves of these programs. So, most teachers have to pay out of pocket to move up another classification level.

"I know many teachers that work multiple jobs to sustain themselves and their families. That is why it is necessary to have this study done for our educators because they continue to put in their hard work, personal time, and personal funds to ensure that our youth are getting the best education they can give while also providing for their own families," said Senator Nelson.

"I want to thank Senator Shelton and Senator Torres for co-sponsoring this amendment with me. I also thank my other colleagues for the unanimous support that was given on this amendment," said Senator Nelson.
