Hagåtña, Guam – Today, Senator Nelson passed an Amendment to the Session Budget Bill 55-36 (COR) to allocate two million dollars ($2,000,000) from the Fiscal Year 2022 Guam Highway fund for the sole purpose of funding bicycle lane infrastructure, village streets and roads resurfacing and repairs.
"With the rise in motorist and bicyclist accidents this year, it is important that we secure this funding for road safety and improvements. I want to ensure that when the Department of Public Works improves the roads, they also include the bike lanes in these improvements," said Senator Nelson.
Last week, Senator Nelson held a roundtable hearing regarding this issue with the Department of Public Works and representatives from the Cycling Community. The Cycling Community expressed their concerns about the rise in motorist and bicyclist accidents. They advised that since the pandemic has started, families have started to take cycling up as a hobby with kids ten (10) years old and younger. Since then, they have noticed that motorists have become more aggressive on the roads.
"I thank my colleagues for their support in helping to pass this amendment. This is a step in the right direction to improving the safety on our roadways for our people," said Senator Nelson.
