(Hagåtña, Guam) – In recognition of the diplomacy and friendship between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Guam, Vice Speaker Telena Cruz Nelson and Speaker Tina Muna Barnes on Friday presented Resolution 328-35 to express their gratitude, on behalf of the people of Guam, for Taiwan’s generous healthcare donation to the island during the COVID-19 crisis.
In May, various Taiwan organizations assisted in facilitating the donation of 200,000 surgical face masks from the China Medical University Hospital (CMUH), based in Taichung, Taiwan, to Guam. The world-class hospital facility has served as an additional option to Guam residents for specialized healthcare in the Asia Pacific region and has treated several patients from Guam in recent years. With respect to the established relationship between Taiwan and Guam, medical professionals at CMUH led discussions on donating medical aid to Guam amid the island’s COVID-19 response and, through the diplomacy and assistance of various Taiwan, Guam and United States partners, was able to ensure their donation of 200,000 face masks made it to the island. The Office of the Governor of Guam received the donation from the Republic of China (Taiwan) in mid-May. The supplies will be distributed to healthcare and front line workers through the Guam Homeland Security and Office of Civil Defense.

As a global leader in healthcare and COVID-19 response, Taiwan is a beacon of light for our region and we won’t soon forget their kindness, compassion and commitment to the people of Guam.”
