Hagåtña, Guam – Vice Speaker Telena Cruz Nelson introduced amendments during session today giving more support to the Guam Academy Charter School Council and more funding to the Guam Department of Education and Guam Office of Veterans Affairs.
Nelson and cosponsor Sen. Régine Biscoe Lee introduced an amendment allocating an additional $885,000 to the Guam Department of Education for capital improvement projects and $115,000 to the Guam Office of Veterans Affairs for the hiring and training of caseworkers. The amendment passed with a majority vote.
“With the help of my colleagues, we secured an additional $885,000 to address the issues our students face, including old, rusted school awnings and poor restroom conditions,” Vice Speaker Telena Nelson said. “We also secured $115,000 to hire and train long overdue caseworkers for our island’s distinguished veterans.”
Nelson introduced another amendment clarifying that $150,000 from the Department of Administration would fund clerical support and administrative full-time staff for the Guam Academy Charter School Council. The clerical support would include, but is not limited to: administrative office space, conference room, office equipment, furnishings and supplies. The amendment passed unanimously.
“With the help of the legislature’s Office of Finance and Budget, I’ve ensured the Guam Academy Charter School Council - for the first time since its inception - has the funding it needs for administrative staff and an office space,” Nelson said. “By giving the council the support they need with full-time staff and clerical assistance, our community should expect more accountability from our charter schools.”
“We will continue supporting the needs of all our students and certainly have kept them at the forefront of our fight for more school funding,” she added.
