Vice Speaker Nelson Greets Students, School Community on First Day

Hagåtña, Guam – Vice Speaker Telena Cruz Nelson joined education administrators, stakeholders and community members this morning in welcoming Guam Department of Education students, parents, and school personnel to their first day of the new school year.

“The start of a new school year signifies our community’s renewed commitment to growing our children and providing them the best education possible,” said Vice Speaker Telena Nelson. “In collaboration with our dedicated teachers, administrators and parents, we will continue working on legislation that best benefits our schools and students, and aids us in building a brighter future for all.”

As chair of the legislature’s Committee on Education, Nelson in recent months has toured the island’s three charter schools, all GDOE high schools, and several elementary and middle schools. In addition to assessing school facilities, the vice speaker over the past year has been consulting with GDOE on school issues and potential legislative remedies.

Nelson encourages the community to practice extra caution on the road, especially where school buses, bus shelters and students are located. As the island’s rainy season progresses, she urges parents and guardians to prepare for developing weather conditions on their way to school, and to observe school zone speed limits at all times.

This week, more than 30,000 students and 4,000 GDOE employees are returning to their regular school year routines.” Nelson added. “We ask the community to keep in mind the thousands of children making their way to school and back home every day.”
