SENATOR NELSON RECEIVES UNANIMOUS SUPPORT FOR RESOLUTION 45-34 (COR)

(Hagåtña, Guam) Senator Telena Cruz Nelson received overwhelming support from her colleagues, receiving fifteen (15) votes in support of Resolution 45-34 (COR), expressing the support of I Mina’ Trentai Kuåttro Na Liheslaturan Guåhan to advocate for government officials to monitor coastal zones on Guam and Micronesia from the possible downstream effects of the Fukushima Daiichi Power Station nuclear accident. Resolution 45-34 (COR) also establishes working sessions to assess the safety of and risk of radiation in seafood products from the Pacific Ocean.

 

On February 24, 2017, Senator Telena Cruz Nelson met with Tatsuo Sunahara, Principal Deputy Director of International Nuclear Energy Cooperation Division Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department to discuss the current state of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Senator Nelson expressed her concerns for Pacific Region waters, marine ecosystems, coastal zones, and fisheries threatened by the spread of radioactive contamination. Senator Nelson wants government officials and scientists to monitor the coastal zones on Guam and the rest of Micronesia from the impacts of this nuclear accident.

 

On April 21, 2017, Senator Telena Cruz Nelson held a Public Hearing on Resolution 45-34 (COR). Present at the Public Hearing was a representative from the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures who also expressed support of Resolution 45-34 (COR).

 

On Resolution 45-34 (COR), Senator Telena Cruz Nelson stated, “We must begin a proactive approach to ensure the safety of our air, water, soil, and food. We should not take lightly the possible threat in radioactive contamination in our seafood, one of our staple foods for survival and our consumption of it as islanders.”

 

Senator Telena Cruz Nelson wishes to thank her colleagues and all international and local government agencies for their support of Resolution 45-34 (COR). Senator Nelson looks forward to working with the various government agencies and scientists in keeping our waters safe and assuring our seafood products are consumable.
